Job Description:

The purpose of the U.S. External Relations (ER), Stakeholder Relations (SR) team is to protect Shell's license to operate and to strengthen Shell's U.S. reputation. We achieve this through:

Managing relationships with selected civil society stakeholders, including NGOs, Foundations and Think-Tanks.

Implementing SR processes, standards, tools and guidelines; providing guidance and advice on stakeholder engagement.

Sensing, analysis and reporting of stakeholder activity of interest to Shell business and reputation.

Partnering with the business to identify, assess and engage stakeholders with an enterprise view.

Strong presentation and communication skills, interpersonal skills and relationship-building are key elements of the role.

Accountabilities:

Focal point for monthly U.S. SR monitoring and written analysis of public media sources for political, social and regulatory trends shaping the energy business.

Serve as our subject matter expert in the U.S. ER organization for Shell’s global stakeholder management system, leading the outreach of this powerful tool with External Relations colleagues in the U.S. and with Shell’s stakeholder team in The Hague.

Serve as focal point for select external relationships; ensure appropriate communications to maximize opportunities with primary external audiences to support Shell U.S. reputation, and business license to operate and grow.

Provide strategic advice to ER colleagues about stakeholders in support of reputation opportunity and risk management.

May be required to assist in developing stakeholder engagement strategy and planned activities – internal and external – for/with the business to support Shell U.S. reputation

Serve as focal point for U.S. socio-economic Fact Sheets; lead annual updates and future creative development.

Engage with U.S., Americas and Global ER peers to ensure alignment with strategies, goals, issues, initiatives, policies, activities, messaging and measurement on as-needed basis depending on stakeholder or project in question.

Support key Shell U.S. reputation outreach projects (Powering Progress Together and Make the Future/Shell Eco-marathon) to support business/asset opportunities.

Dimensions:

Strong ER coordination and alignment is critical with the business, and colleagues within ER, Government Relations, Investor Relations and Media colleagues.

Manage internal business stakeholder engagement and provide strategic counsel on stakeholder discipline.

Requirements:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing communications or related field.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive materials.

An understanding of broad energy industry issues and external stakeholder perspectives.

Significant experience working in a communications or related field.

Ability to think strategically about external stakeholder engagement at the national or regional level as a lever to support Shell U.S. reputation as well as individual business objectives.

Ability to secure the trust of ER colleagues and senior business leaders alike.

Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including sound writing and speaking skills, and experience in issues management, stakeholder engagement, and the identification/management of non-technical risks and key stakeholder relationships as they pertain to corporate reputation.

Strong listening and influencing skills to enlist involvement/support from all levels of the organization internally, as well as with external entities.

Ability and eagerness to undertake detailed, data-driven projects: annual update of US Fact-Sheets, data manipulation within the Shell Stakeholder Relations Management System.

Capable of interfacing and coordinating with wide variety of personalities, inclusive in approach

Proven track record as self-starter, willingness to assume management of complex projects, paying attention to detail and setting priorities to meet deadlines.

Exceptional judgment; ability to think strategically and tactically under pressure, constantly adjusting priorities as circumstances change.

Sets stretch targets for self to ensure high quality performance.
